Welcome to Classification & Compensation

The classification systems at UNL have been adopted to facilitate the systematic evaluation of office/service and managerial/professional positions and to assign positions with similar work and responsibility to similar pay grades. A position classification is based on a variety of factors: duties performed, scope and level of responsibilities assigned, nature and extent of supervision received and/or exercised, and minimum qualifications required for a person to perform the duties assigned to your position. You may view complete listings of classification pay grades and titles at the Circulation Desks in the reserve sections of Love Library and C.Y. Thompson Library. These documents are listed as: UNL Office/Service and UNL Managerial/Professional.

Classification Procedures

The Position Questionnaire form is required if a department wants to create, reclassify, or update a position. Please fill form out completely, acquire the appropriate approval signatures and submit to the Human Resources Administrative Office. This form must be completed and have the appropriate signatures before submission to Human Resources.

It should include the following information:

  • General responsibilities and specific duties to be assigned to the new position.

  • Minimum qualifications for the person to occupy the position.

  • Answers to questions asked on the form.

The following information must also be provided:

  • Justification of the need for the new position.

  • Source of funding.

  • Company Center to which the position will be assigned.

The questionnaire and the memo should be forwarded to the appropriate area(s) for signatures. The Human Resources Department will review the materials submitted for final approval and will, as soon as possible, notify the department in writing of the classification decision.

Reclassification Procedures

A request for reclassification may be initiated by the employee or by the employee's supervisor, and must be submitted for departmental approval. Requests must acquire the appropriate approval signatures before they will be reviewed by the Department of Human Resources.

Department Requests for Reclassification
Department heads are responsible for organizing the work in their areas, and have authority to change and reassign duties and responsibilities as needed. If the employee believes significant changes have been made in the duties assigned to the position, the employee should discuss a request for reclassification with their supervisor.

Reclassification Initiated by the Department of Human Resources
The Department of Human Resources may initiate a review to consider a position for reclassification. When this occurs, the department may be required to complete a position questionnaire.

Reclassification and the Incumbent Employee
If a current position is reclassified, the employee should not assume that they are automatically qualified to hold the position under the new classification. If it is determined that the employee does not possess the minimum qualifications, the employee may be transferred to another position, or may be dismissed from UNL. If the employee is dismissed under these circumstances, the employee will be eligible for benefits under the UNL Reduction-in-Force Policy.
