Answers
| How old do I have to be to apply for a job at the University? |
You must at least be 16 years of age to be eligible for employment at the Univeristy. |
| Where can I find job vacancies at UNL |
A list of all current job openings is available for your review at the Employment Office, and is posted at various strategically located bulletin boards around campus. We also have a Job Line recording (402) 472-2303 and a website you can access at employment.unl.edu. These postings are usually updated every Friday by 5:00 pm. Most positions are advertised in local newspapers. |
| Where can I apply for a job with UNL? |
To apply for an Office/Service position, send a completed application to the Employment Office located at Room 32 Lower Level of Canfield Administration Building, situated north of 14th and "R" Streets. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. The office is open during the lunch hour. To apply for Managerial/Professional position, submit a resume, cover letter and any other materials required according to the instructions included in the job opening announcement on the Job List. |
| Can I apply directly to the department? |
If you are applying for a Managerial/Professional position you are asked to submit all application materials (cover letters, resumes, references, etc.) directly to the hiring department. Specific application details are provided in the job announcement/advertisement. If you are applying for an Office/Service position, application materials should be submitted to and screened by Human Resources - Employment Office. |
| Can I apply on-line? |
Yes, apply online at employment.unl.edu |
| Can I submit my resume for an Office/Service position instead of filling out the application form? |
If you are interested in an Office/Service position, resumes are accepted but may NOT substitute for the UNL application form. UNL application form provides necessary information not found on most resumes, information we use when screening applicants. |
| Do I have to fill out a new application for each Office/Service position I apply for? |
Once you fill out an application, your application will remain on file for a period of twelve months from the date of completion and can be used to apply for as many positions as desired. One application form is sufficient for applying for any Office/Service positions during that year. However, once you are hired, you will need to submit a new application when applying for future openings. |
| Is there a deadline to apply for an Office/Service position that I am interested in? |
The deadline for applications for Office/Service positions is 1:00pm each Friday, unless otherwise stated. |
| I'd like to apply for an Office/Service position but I don't have time to come to your office, what can I do? |
Applications may be obtained at the Employment Office, downloaded from the UNL Human Resources web site, or can be mailed or sent via fax upon request, to anyone interested in filling out an application. You may also contact us via e-mail at unljobs@unl.edu to have your application considered for a current Office/Service position opening (your application must be on file in the Employment Office in order to do this). Please indicate the title and vacancy number of the position for which you are applying. Your e-mail message must be received by the closing date listed. We check our e-mail messages daily to provide you with timely response (on Fridays, the e-mail is checked at 1:00 p.m. to ensure that those applying via e-mail will be considered for jobs open that week). |
| How long does it take after I put in my application for an Office/Service position, for someone to contact me? |
If you have not been contacted by the department within two weeks after the closing date for an Office/Service position you have applied for, this may indicate that you have not been selected as a finalist for the position; you may want to consider applying for other openings since your application remains on active status for twelve months from the time of your application was submitted. |
| How does the applicant screening process work for Office/Service positions? |
Once Office/Service positions close on Friday at 1:00pm, a Human Resources Facilitator will evaluate your work-related job history, educational background and will select a finalist group of candidates for referral to the department(s) for consideration. If you are selected as a finalist, an interview will be arranged by the hiring department. If you have not been contacted by the department within two weeks after the closing date, this may indicate that you have not been selected as a finalist for the position; you may want to consider applying for other openings since your application remains on active status for twelve months from the time of your application was submitted. If you are selected as the top candidate for the position, job-related references will be checked (usually with current and former supervisors) and you may be scheduled for a pre-employment physical examination if the position requires one. |
| I have applied for various Office/Service jobs at UNL and received a number of interviews but no job offers, what can I do? |
Contact the Employment Office and schedule a time to meet with a Human Resources Facilitator and request for an "Informational Interview".An Informational Interview is available upon your request or by visiting or calling our office for an appointment (walk-ins welcome). This is a one-on-one meeting to broaden your understanding of the employment process and address job-specific questions you may have. |
| I did not see a salary listed in the newspaper ad or on the job list. How can I find out what the salary is for a position? |
You can learn about salary grade information for any position by phoning the Employment Office (472-3101). |
| When will I become permanent? |
All newly hired regular employees (office/service and managerial/ professional) serve a six-month original probationary period. The probationary period is an extension of the selection process and is used to determine an employee's suitability for employment at UNL. When an employee's original probationary period draws to a close, a performance evaluation is completed. At the successful completion of the probationary period an employee is considered "regular" staff."Permanent" is a term mistakenly used term to mean regular appointment. |
| When can I start my benefits (health/life/dental insurance)? |
The first day of the first full-month of employment. If hired on the first day of a month, then benefits will begin that day. |
| As a new employee of less than six months (still on original probation) and have been granted approval to apply for another position, how will my transfer effect my probation period? |
When an employee is appointed to another position "outside" the department before the six-month probationary period is completed, the original probationary period will begin anew. If the appointment/transfer is "within" the same department, the probation will continue from the original date of hire. |
| As a new employee, when can I start tuition remission? |
Full-time regular employees must be in pay status on the first day of classes to be eligible. |
