Ruth Staples Child Development Laboratory
Operated by the College of Human Resources and Family Sciences, 35th and Fair Streets on East Campus.
The Ruth Staples Child Development Laboratory provides development programs for young children which involve students in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and other university departments. It serves both teacher training and research functions at undergraduate and graduate levels and offers students opportunities for observation and study of children. The lab is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

One of the earliest university laboratory schools in the nation, the preschool program has been in existence since 1925. The present building was completed in 1970 and was completely renovated in 1993. Preschool and child care programs for children ages 2 through 5 are available. The preschool program has 4 groups of children who attend 2 or 3 days each week during the regular academic year of the university. Vacancies are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and an attempt is made to keep the groups balanced according to age and sex.

BryanLGH Mildly Ill Child Center Services: 481-8623

This program provides care for moderately ill children ranging in age from three months to 12 years at BryanLGH Medical Center East (located just north of Sumner Street on 51st Street) from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Although program care givers cannot diagnose illnesses or replace the need for a physician's expertise regarding medical care, they can provide supervision, dispense prescription medications as needed, and provide breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks. Numerous steps are taken to minimize the risk of exposing participating children to new cantabions while recuperating from their current illness. For example, children will be assigned to one of two rooms based on their illnesses. Each room has a sparate ventilation system to prevent air flow from one room into the other. In all cases, a physician's diagnosis is required when symptoms indicate a potential of a contagious illness.

Parent will need to complete a registration form that includes general information on the child's health and immunization status. (The registration form can also be completed at the center.) Since space is limited, reservations are required and accepted in the order they are received. Since space is limited, reservations are required and accepted in the order they are received.
