New awards to honor work of university staff

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Staff Senate has launched new awards to honor the work of staff employees.

Developed by the senate’s Recognition Committee, the awards are an opportunity for current UNL and Nebraska Extension employees to nominate staff for eight honors. The awards connect to the university’s N2025 strategic plan and core belief that “every person and every interaction matters.”

The awards include the Student Experiences Award, Research Impact Award, Problem Solver Award, Engagement Award, Inclusive Excellence Award, Professional Development Award, Staff Advocacy Award, and Customer Service Award.

Any non-probationary staff member of the university or Nebraska Extension is eligible to receive the awards. Submissions, which are being accepted through March 15, can be made on the Staff Senate website by clicking on “Submit a Nomination.”

The Recognition Committee is one of nine standing committees of the Staff Senate. The senate is an advisory body on issues, institutional policies, and practices that relate to the staff. Their work includes serving as a forum for the exchange of ideas; promoting common interests among staff; advocating for staff welfare and development; suggesting revisions and initiatives to improve staff policies; and participating in the formulation of institutional policy and governance.

Senators, who are elected by their peers, represent one of seven districts defined by the university’s overall organization and serve on nine standing committees which include the Executive Committee; Bylaws Committee; Liaison Committee; Communications Committee; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee; Elections Committee; Personnel Affairs Committee; Recognition Committee; and Legislation Committee.

The Recognition Committee is tasked with developing opportunities to recognize the university’s approximately 4,000 staff employees. The annual staff awards will be awarded to individuals that exemplify an aim or the overarching principle of the University’s N2025 Strategic Plan. All nominators and nominees will be notified in April. Award presentations will take place during the university’s All-Staff Conference closing ceremony on May 21.
