Leaving university employment
Use this plan as a guide when staff is ending their employment with the university. If the employee is leaving voluntarily, resignation or retirement, the following notice must be given.
- Regular office/service employees shall give at least two weeks advance notice.
- Regular managerial/professional employees shall give at least ninety days advance written notice.
Use the offboarding plan document for details, but here is a brief overview.
- Obtain the resignation letter for the employee file.
- Process the Separation PAF. Be sure the employee is aware that their access to university systems is terminated at the end of business on the last day of employment (appointment end date or separation date) following the timeline below.
- Schedule an Exit Interview (if desired by employee).
- Provide employee with the Offboarding Checklist for their reference.
- Confirm Vacation/Sick Leave/Floating Holiday balances and/or payout for the employee. Discuss arrangements for last paycheck direct deposit in bank account.
- Have the employee update their address and phone in Firefly so they will receive their last W-2.
- Coordinate the return of university equipment using the Objects on Loan and Key Management to do so. This includes any university-licensed software.
- Website and contact sheets need to be updated.
RIF Planning
If you need to implement a reduction in force (RIF) because of changing priorities, budgetary constraints, or other operational needs.
Access to Electronic Services
Employee access to electronic services (Canvas, Microsoft 365 including email, NUgrant, network drives, etc.) will end on the last day of employment (separation date or appointment end date). Emeriti faculty/staff that have active appointments will retain access, per department instructions. This does not include access to Firefly. See Executive Memorandum #16 for more information.

For those with student/alumni @huskers.unl.edu accounts:
When you end your faculty/staff employment at the university, all content from your @unl.edu and all content from your @huskers.unl.edu will be deleted. Your student/alumni @huskers.unl.edu account will be suspended for seven days when you end your faculty/staff employment and any email sent to that account will receive a bounce back. After the seven days your @huskers.unl.edu account will be available to you and will no longer have any content.
