Health Benefits for New Employees

NUFlex is the University of Nebraska’s flexible benefits program. A flexible benefits program allows you to choose from a group of benefit options that best suit your circumstances and lifestyle. Eligibility for Benefits

  • Full-Time & Part-Time Employees are eligible if employed in a "regular" position with an FTE of .5 or greater.
  • Temporary Employees* are eligible if employed in a "temporary" position for more than six (6) months with an FTE of .5 or greater.
    • If a temporary worker’s original assignment is fewer than six months, they are not benefits eligible.   
    • If a temporary worker’s original assignment is greater than six months, they will be benefits eligible with no waiting period. 
    • If a temporary worker’s original assignment was fewer than six months, but at a later date their assignment is extended to greater than six months, the worker will be benefits-eligible at the time of the extension and is not required to work six months to be eligible.
Benefits for eligible temporary employees include: Temporary employees are not eligible for:
  • health and life insurance
  • sick and vacation leave
  • injury leave
  • civil leave
  • inclement weather leave
  • military leave
  • tuition remission
  • administrative leave
  • funeral leave 
  • paid holidays
  • university contributions to retirement

 

* Departments are responsible for notifying temporary employees when they become eligible for insurance benefits. 

 

Medical, Dental, and Vision plans

  • You can choose to enroll in all or some of the plans.
  • You can change/update your benefits enrollment each year in October when NUFlex Annual Enrollment is open.
  • The medical and dental premiums are deducted before taxes.
  • You must be enrolled in a plan in order to enroll dependents.
  • You can also enroll different dependents in different plans.

If you have any complications or require assistance with the enrollment process, please contact the Benefits Office at benefits@unl.edu or 402.472.2600, or visit the benefits enrollment help page.

  1. Insurance Benefits Enrollment in Firefly (firefly.nebraska.edu). Click on the Benefits Enrollment tile to get started.
  2. Turn in Dependent Verification Documents to the Benefits office [Required IF covering dependents] either through an upload in Firefly during enrollment process or by email. Dependent Information Request Form | Dependent Verification Documentation Requirements
  3. Complete the Record of Prior Service. Employees enrolling in the Basic Retirement 401(a) Plan that have had prior service with an employer whose primary purpose or activity provided a formalized program of education, should complete the Record of Prior Service form electronically.
    Submit the form for consideration even if you are unsure if you qualify. Service earned in any type of position including full-time, part-time, or temporary employment should be considered towards prior service credit.
  4. Complete Assurity Online Statement of Health. [Required IF you enroll in Voluntary Life Insurance or Dependent Life Insurance] If you do not complete the statement of health, your insurance will not be activated. Assurity Life Insurance Statement of Health Form  Required if applying for $300,000 or more of voluntary employee coverage or $50,000 or more of spouse coverage.
  5. Complete the Health Risk Assessment (HRA). [15-20 minutes to complete] This is a voluntary survey about your current health status. It helps you evaluate your health, and you receive enhanced wellness/preventive services benefits for completing it.
