Understanding Your Sick & Vacation Leave

All regular employees of the University of Nebraska shall accrue with vacation and sick leave on their date of hire. You are eligible to use sick leave as soon as it has accrued. (See University of Nebraska Administration Human Resources Handbook for Policies)

Vacation Leave

Vacation leave accrual begins on the first day of employment and ends on the last day of employment. Rate of accrual is shown in the accrual charts which follow. Regular part-time employees shall earn vacation leave on a proportionate basis to their FTE. Unused vacation is paid when an employee leaves university employment.

With departmental approval, employees may be advanced up to five days of vacation leave.

Sick Leave

Sick leave may be used when you are unable to perform employment duties because of sickness, disability, or injury. It may also be used for medical and dental appointments. If circumstances warrant, your department may require a medical statement about whether your presence at work poses a risk to self or others.

A maximum of five (5) working days per illness or per incident within a major illness may be granted when illness or injury of a member of your immediate family requires your presence. You may also use sick leave for medical and dental appointments of immediate family members if your presence is required. 

Sick leave may not be used while on vacation leave, with the exception if you are hospitalized while on vacation leave. You may be required to provide supporting documentation to your immediate supervisor.

Sick Leave Advancement
When all sick leave and vacation leave are exhausted, you may be advanced up to 40 hours (one work week) of sick leave, pro-rated for part-time employees.


Immediate Family is defined by the university as spouse (or persons bearing the same relationships to the spouse), child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, child-in-law, sibling-in-law, guardian, ward, stepparent, and stepchild.
