All student employees, with the exception of graduate teaching assistants, graduate research assistants, UCARE undergraduate research assistants, health aides, and residence hall student assistants, are paid in accordance with the Student Employee Wage Scale (below), regardless of the source of funds involved. No student employee appointment may be paid above the respective wage scale maximum without approval from Human Resources.
The department must consider the nature of the work, the level of responsibility in the position, and the education and experience required when deciding on the pay. The department is responsible for paying students equitably compared with each other. The department is responsible for considering internal equity with similar or same non-student positions; meaning that students should not be paid more than non-student positions that are the same or similar work, and are generally paid less because 1) the position is temporary in nature 2) the student is not committing to a full-time schedule and often needs flexibility around academic needs, and 3) is often working in a learning capacity with less responsibility than a non-student employee.
